10 top tips for winterising your boat

Get ready for winter!

As the sailing season in many parts of the world winds down, it's time to start thinking about preparing your boat for winter. A proper winterisation process will ensure that your vessel stays in top condition, ready for smooth sailing when spring arrives.

Here are our 10 top tips to help you look after your vessel during the off-season.

1. Clean and inspect your boat

Before you begin the process, give your boat a thorough clean. Remove any dirt, grime and salt that may have accumulated over the season. Inspect the hull, deck and fittings for any signs of damage that will need to be addressed before your boat goes into storage.

2. Drain and flush the engine

One of the critical steps in winterising your boat is taking care of the engine. Drain the engine of any remaining water to prevent freezing and potential damage from the cold. Flush the engine with fresh water and add antifreeze (according to the manufacturer’s instructions) to ensure all parts are fully protected.

3. Fuel system maintenance

Top off your fuel tank to prevent condensation - this can cause fuel contamination if not addressed. Add a stabiliser to keep the fuel fresh over the winter months. Make sure that you then run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabiliser circulates throughout the system.

4. Protect the plumbing

Drain all water from your boat’s plumbing system including sinks, heads and any freshwater tanks. Use non-toxic antifreeze that’s specifically designed for marine use to fill the plumbing lines. This will prevent any remaining water from freezing and causing additional damage to your pipes.

5. Battery care

Disconnect your boat’s battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Make sure to fully charge the battery before putting it into storage and check its charge periodically throughout the winter. If possible, use a trickle charger to maintain the battery’s charge level.

6. Secure and store sails / canvas

Remove sails, canvas covers and any other fabric items from your boat. Clean and dry them thoroughly before storing in a dry, well-ventilated area. This prevents mould and mildew from forming during the winter months

7. Cover your boat

Wherever you store your boat, invest in a high-quality cover that fits snugly and provides adequate protection against the elements. Always ensure the cover is well-ventilated to prevent moisture buildup, which can also lead to an unpleasant build up of mould and mildew.

8. Lubricate moving parts

This part is time-consuming and not very exciting but take the opportunity to apply lubricant to all your boat’s moving parts. This includes all winches, hinges and latches. This simple task prevents corrosion and ensures that everything is working smoothly when you’re ready to hit the water again.

9. Check and replace anodes

Inspect all of the sacrificial anodes on your boat’s hull and engine. If they are already heavily corroded, then replace them now as they’ll only get worse in the cold. New anodes offer proper protection against galvanic corrosion over the winter.

10. Create a winterisation checklist

Finally, create a detailed checklist of all the tasks you need to complete to winterise your boat. This ensures that you don’t overlook any crucial steps and provides a handy reference when it’s time to de-winterize in the spring. It also gives you a headstart when putting your boat back into storage at the end of the next sailing season.

Winterising your boat may seem like a daunting task, but with these easy tips, you can ensure your vessel is well-protected during the off-season. A little effort now will save you time, money and stress when it’s time to sail again.
